Giuliana  nacque a Norwich nel 1342 e morì intorno al 1420. Ella dedicò la sua intera vita al Signore. Visse come anacoreta  in una cella accanto alla chiesa di Santa Giuliana a Norwich. Nel 1373 durante una grave malattia il Signore le si rivelò per sedici volte e per 20 anni ella meditò su questi incontri. Infine scrisse nel libro "Rivelazioni dell'amore divino" il risultato delle sue meditazioni. Il suo è il primo libro scritto in lingua inglese da una donna ed è riconosciuto in tutto il mondo come un grande classico della letteratura spirituale.

Come una collezione di perle rare offriamo ai lettori le meditazioni di Giuliana di Norwich.
Esse sono dei boccioli profumati che si aprono nel cuore di chi legge e vi lasciano la loro fragranza.
Le doniamo con trepidazione, lentamente, goccia a goccia perché solo così si può bucare il muro dell'amore e andarne al di là per raggiungere la rivelazione.

Egli conserva tutto quel che ha creato

Mi ha mostrato una piccola cosa, grande quanto una nocciola che si tiene nel palmo della mano, ed era tonda come una pallina.
L'ho guardata con l'occhio dell'anima ed ho pensato: " Cosa può essere"? E la risposta è arrivata "E' tutto ciò che Lui ha creato."
Mi sono meravigliata che potesse durare, perché sembrava doversi frantumare e non rimanerne niente, era così piccola! E la risposta è arrivata alla mia mente: "dura e durerà per sempre perché Dio la ama". Tutte le cose esistono per l'amore di Dio.
In questa piccola cosa ho visto tre verità. La prima è che Dio l'ha creata. La seconda è che Dio la ama. La terza è che Dio se ne prende cura.
Cosa è veramente Dio se è il creatore, se è colui che ama e che conserva?
Non trovo le parole per rispondere. So che fin quando non sarò  una cosa sola  con lui non potrò riposare e trovar pace. Non potrò mai trovare la risposta fin quando non gli sarò così vicina che nulla si interporrà fra noi.

He keeps all that is made

He showed me a little thing, the size of a hazelnut, in the palm of my hand, and it was as round as a ball. I looked at it with my mind's eye and I thought, "What can it be?" And answer came, "It is all that is made.".I marvelled that it could last, for I thought it might have crumbled to nothing, it was so small. And the answer came into my mind, "it lasts and ever shall because God loves it". And all things have being through the love of God.
In this little thing I saw three thruths. The first is that God made it. The second is that God loves it. The third is that God looks after it.
What is he indeed that is maker and lover and keeper? I cannot find words to tell. For untill I am one with him I can never have true rest nor peace. I can never know it until I am held so close to him that there is nothing in between.

La nostra preghiera dona al Signore grande gioia e letizia. Egli la desidera e l'aspetta.
Con la sua grazia può renderci simili a Lui come ci fece al momento della creazione. Questa è la sua santa volontà.
Egli ci dice cosi: "Prega  nel tuo cuore anche quando non provi gioia nella preghiera perché fa bene, anche se non senti nulla, non vedi nulla, si, anche quando pensi che non puoi pregare. Perché quando tu sei arido e vuoto, malato e debole, io amo le tue preghiere anche se non piacciono a te. Ogni preghiera di chi crede mi è preziosa".
Dio accetta la buona volontà e il lavoro del suo servo qualsiasi sia il nostro stato d'animo.

Our prayer brings great joy and gladness to our Lord. He wants it and awaits it.
By his grace he can make us as like him in condition as we are by creation. This is his blessed will.
So he says this, "Pray inwardly, even tough you find no joy in it. For it does good, though you feel nothing, see nothing, yes, even though you think you cannot pray. For when you are dry and empty, sick and weak, your prayers please me, though there be little enouh to please you. All believing prayer is precious to me".
God accepts the good-will and work of his servants, no matter how we feel

Egli dice: "Non biasimare troppo te stesso, pensando che  la tua infelicità e i tuoi problemi  siano tutta colpa tua, perché io non voglio che tu sia ingiustamente triste e scoraggiato".
Il nostro nemico tenta di deprimerci attraverso false paure di sua invenzione. La sua intenzione è quella di stancarci e demoralizzarci e di scacciare dalla nostra mente la vista benedetta del nostro eterno Amico.
E' una bella forma di umiltà - scaturita dalla grazia e misericordia dello Spirito Santo - quando la nostra anima peccatrice accetta volentieri e con gioia le prove che nostro Signore ci manda. Sembreranno leggere e facili se solo accettiamo contenti ciò che egli ci chiede di sopportare.

He says, "do not blame yourself too much, thinkng that your trouble and distress is all your fault. For it is not my will that you should be unduly sad and despondent".

Our enemy tries to depress us by false fears which he proposes. His intention is to make us so weary and dejected, that we let the blessed sight of our everlasting friend slip from our minds.

It is a beautiful humility - brought about by the grace and mercy of the Holy Spirit - when a sinful soul willingly and gladly accept the chastisement our Lord himself give us. It will seem light and easy, if only we accept contentedly what he calls upon us to bear.

Noi preghiamo Dio perché ci ha fatto il dono del suo corpo santo, del suo sangue prezioso, della sua Passione benedetta, delle sue ferite infinitamente care e della sua morte.

Come il corpo è avvolto nei vestiti e la carne nella pelle e le ossa nella carne e il cuore nel tutto, così noi siamo racchiusi, corpo e anima, nella bontà del Signore e avvolti in essa.

il nostro amato desidera che la nostra anima stia attaccata a Lui con tutta la sua forza e che noi rimaniamo per sempre aggrappati  alla sua bontà.  Perché è questo che piace al Signore e rafforza l'anima.

Egli che ha creato l'uomo per l'amore attraverso lo stesso amore lo riporterà ad essere felice come lo era al momento della creazione ed ancora oltre.

We pray to God because of his holy body and precious blood, his blessed Passion, and his most dear death and wounds.

As the body is clad in clothes, and the flesh in the skin, and the bones in the flesh, and the heart in the whole, so are we clothed, body and soul, in the goodness of God and enfolded in it.

Our lover desires that our soul should cling to him with all its might, and that we should ever hold fast to his goodness. For this above all else pleases God and strengthens the soul.

he who made man for love, will by that same love restore him to his former blessedness - and yet more.

L'amore che l'Altissimo nutre per la nostra anima è talmente grande da superare ogni nostra capacità di comprensione.
Nessun essere creato è in grado di capire quanto e con quale dolcezza e tenerezza egli ci ami.
La nostra volontà tende naturalmente verso Dio e desidera possederlo e la Santa volontà del Signore è tesa a possedere la sua creatura.
Non c'è pace per la nostra volontà e per il nostro desiderio fin quando non riusciamo a conoscere il Signore nella pienezza della gioia. Solo allora il nostro desiderio si acquieta.
Lui desidera che il nostro tempo sia speso impegnandoci a conoscerlo e amarlo fino a diventare un'unità con lui in cielo.
La nostra vita è radicata nella fede nella speranza e nell'amore.

The love that God most high has for our soul is so great that it surpasses understanding.
No created being can comprehend how much, and how sweetly, and how tenderly our maker loves us.
Our in-born will is to have God, and the goodwill of God is to have us.
There is no end to our willing and longing until we know God in the fullness of joy. Then our desire is filled.
He wills that our occupation shall be in striving to know and love him until we are made whole in heaven.
Our life is grounded in faith, with hope and love besides.

Ho visto un rivolo di sangue scarlatto scendere giù dalla Corona, era ancora caldo e copioso come al momento della Sua Passione quando la corona di spine venne premuta sul Suo Santo capo - Egli che era Dio ed era anche uomo e che soffrì per me. Ed io nel mio cuore sentii che quella visione me la mandava Lui senza intermediari.

E mentre io vedevo il sangue scorrere dal suo capo continuavo a ripetere: "Sia benedetto il Signore."

Tutto questo accese il mio cuore per i miei fratelli in Cristo perché volevo che essi sentissero e vedessero ciò che vedevo e sentivo io e desse loro conforto. Questa visione infatti era indirizzata al mondo.

Sono certa che Dio è tutto ciò che è buono, ha creato tutto ciò che esiste, e ama tutto ciò che ha fatto. Così colui che ama tutti i suoi fratelli in Cristo per amore di Dio, ama tutto ciò che è stato creato.

I saw the red blood trickle down from under the garland, hot and fresh and plentiful, as it did at the time of his Passion when the crown of thorns was pressed into his blessed head - he who was both God and man and who suffered for me. And I knew in my heart that he showed me this himself without any go-between.

And while I saw the blood flow from his head I never ceased from saying: "Blessed be the Lord."

In all this I was greatly stirred in love for all my fellow-Christians, for I wanted them to know and see what I saw so that it would confort them. For this sight was shown for all the world.

As I see it, God is all that is good, has made all that is made, and loves all he has made. So he who loves all his fellow-Christians for God's sake, loves all that is made.

Nostro Signore mi ha mostrata la Madonna, Maria la Santa, per insegnare a tutti noi che è stata la saggezza e la verità dentro di lei quando portava nel suo grembo il Creatore che la rese capace di comprendere quanto Lui fosse grande, quanto fosse santo, quanto fosse potente e buono.

La Sua grandezza e la Sua nobiltà la sopraffecero. Ella si vide  così piccola e debole, così semplice e povera paragonata a Dio che fu ripiena di umiltà. E così dal suo stato di umiltà ella fu sollevata fino alla grazia e riempita di tutte le virtù ed ora si trova in alto  sopra di tutti.

E' questo soprattutto che rende  l'anima  piccola ai propri occhi:  "Vedere ed amare il proprio Creatore". Questo è ciò che la riempie di riverenza,  di umiltà e di amore generoso verso i propri fratelli in Cristo.

Chi ricerca con fede, speranza e amore piace a nostro Signore e i risultati piacciono all'anima e la riempiono di gioia.

Our Lord showed me our Lady, Saint Mary, to teach us this: that it was the wisdom and truth in her, when she beheld her maker, that enabled her to know him as so great, so holy, so mighty, and so good.

His greatness and his nobleness overwhelmed her. She saw herself so little and low, so simple and poor compared with God that she was filled with humility. And so fom this humble state she was lifted up to grace and all manner of virtues and stands above all.

This above all causes the soul to seem small in its own sight: to see and love its maker. And this is what fills it with reverence and humility, and with generous love to our fellow-Christians.

The seeking, with faith, hope and love, pleases our Lord, and the findings  pleases the soul and fills it with joy.
